CSA’s

Free Choice CSA: In 1990, Jan developed a CSA model that allowed our customers to control exactly what they got in return for supporting the farm through the expensive early spring startup season. She coined the term “Free Choice” CSA, and 35 years later it remains truly the most flexible option on the market. When you invest in our farm at the start of the season, you receive a credit with the farm in the amount you paid PLUS a percentage bonus. You can spend down that credit all season at any of our five summer farmers’ markets or at our stocked farm store in Dresden.

Choose exactly what you want from everything we sell. At markets you’ll find all of our organic vegetables and strawberries, organic seedlings in May and June, and our wood-fired maple syrup. At the farm store, find all that plus a full selection of top-quality food we love from closeby farms and producers: eggs, fresh sourdough bread, ground beef, chicken pot pies, sausage, raw milk, cheese, yogurt, kraut and other ferments, jams and chutneys, hot sauce, honey, apples and cider, and more. And if you’ve chosen the Full Share, you’re enjoying all of it at the equivalent of a 10% discount.

What: Full Share or Half Share. The Full Share costs $400 and gives you a $440 credit. The Half Share costs $200 and gives you a $215 credit.

When: Sign up by May 1st to get the bonus. You can still sign up after May 1st for the convenience of not needing to bring payment and to save us on credit card fees.

How: Please bring a check to market or the farm stand, or mail it to us at 250 River Rd, Dresden 04342. Please make sure your email address is written legibly somewhere so that we can contact you if needed. You’ll get a card (or your old card will be reloaded), and you can bring it with you to scan at market. If you forget your card, we can easily look you up by name in our system.

How Long: 25 Weeks! Start using your Free Choice balance at our first markets in May, and finish it up by Halloween.

Here’s what your investment in the farm supports:

  • 10+ year-round, full-time jobs, plus more seasonal jobs. We take care of our employees and they tend to stick around for years and even decades. Our main financial investments are in systems and equipment that make the job of farming easier on human bodies.
  • Over 100 acres of organic land stewardship on the banks of Merrymeeting Bay. More than just certified organic, we have worked for more than 30 years to build up healthy soil, protect waterways, and support safe habitat for wildlife on family and rented land.
  • Food Access: We donate over 15 tons of our organic produce annually, and are supporters of Maine Harvest Bucks and WIC.
  • A sustainable and equitable local food system. All of the above are essential to healthy land and food being here for future generations.

What’s in it for you?

  • Eat local, organic food year round. Fresh food grown in healthy soil means the best flavor and nutrition possible.
  • Choose only what you want and as much as your family needs. There’s no worry of getting
food you don’t like or of food loss if you vacation.
  • Diversity! Find as many as 70 different items on our market tables to choose from. We pride ourselves on quality and abundance, and research new varieties to try every year. Farm Store shoppers have access to about as complete a rich, local diet as you can find!
  • A great fit for home gardeners. You’re welcome to use your share on our organic seedlings, too! Choose from herbs, flowers and a huge assortment of veggie starts. Let us grow to fruition whatever else you need.
  • Beyond vegetables: Farm raised meats, eggs, bread, dairy, honey, fruit, preserves and ferments, and our own maple syrup can be purchased with your share.
  • A good deal! Whatever you choose to get, you’re getting it at the equivalent of a 7.5%-10% bonus, depending on which Share you choose.

We want to be your farmers! Thank you for keeping us going for another season.

– Jan, Rob, Carl, Göran, and the rest of the farm crew

Free Choice CSA FAQs

Can I split a share/Can my family member use my share? Yes! The person using the share just needs to know the name it’s under, or have your card with them.

I spent it really fast. Can I refill my CSA card? Yes! Many of our customers love the convenience of our CSA system and add money through the season. Only money invested by May 1st receives the bonus, however.

What happens if I don’t use it up? The nature of a CSA is that it’s an investment at the start of the growing season, and the dividends are the food that grows with that investment. Any remaining balance after the fall deadline does not roll over into the next season. With our abundance of storage crops available from September onward, you have lots of options for spending in time.

Do I have to choose just one location? No! You can use your Free Choice CSA at any of our FIVE summer-season locations: Wednesday and Saturday Portland Farmers’ Markets, Bath Farmers’ Market, Boothbay Farmers’ Market, Damariscotta Farmers’ Market, or here at the Farm Store, open 7 days/week.

I lost my card. What next? We can issue you a new card, or you can just keep using your share by giving us your name when you shop. It’s quick and easy for us to look you up in our system and run your transaction.

I’m really only in it for the strawberries. Is that cool? Yes! Whether you want to spend $20 a week on salad, or fill your freezer with $440 worth of organic sweet corn in one August week, you are free to choose.

I really want to be sold. Why should I choose Goranson Farm? Besides the sheer abundance of what we make available to you, we farm by our values, and our customers tend to share those values: Environmental stewardship beyond basic regulations. Top quality produce, as healthy and delicious as possible. Fair, sustainable jobs for the people doing the work. Wider access to great food for all in our community. We have been in this business since 1960, but not a year goes by that we’re not actively working and learning to improve how we do things for everyones’ benefit.

How does a CSA save on credit card fees? When you choose to pay by check or cash, all of your grocery budget goes to the farm. With credit cards, we pay the processing company a percentage of your purchase, plus a per-transaction fee. If you are someone who loves the convenience of paying with a card (or smartphone or watch), we want to offer that option for you. Using a Free Choice CSA saves us at least the per-transaction fee, depending how you buy it. The fees do add up to hundreds of dollars per week for us, and we like to keep our food prices down where possible.
